Best Uses for River Rock

Decorative garden beds⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Most popular use. 1–2 inch river rock over landscape fabric at 2–3 inches deep. Looks natural, suppresses weeds, lasts indefinitely. Great around ornamental plants and shrubs.

Dry creek beds⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A dry creek bed (also called a river run) uses river rock of various sizes arranged in a winding bed shape. Excellent for drainage swales and also purely decorative. Use 3–6 inch rocks at 4–6 inch depth.

Around trees and shrubs⭐⭐⭐⭐

River rock around trees suppresses weeds without the annual replacement of mulch. Avoid placing rock against the trunk. Extend 3–4 feet from trunk for large trees.

Water features and ponds⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

River rock is the standard surround for water features, fountains, and ponds. Natural, waterproof, and pairs beautifully with water plants.

Pathway borders and edging⭐⭐⭐⭐

Large river rocks (4–8 inches) make excellent natural edging along paths and between lawn and beds. Stack 2–3 rocks high for a low border wall effect.

Foundation drainage⭐⭐⭐⭐

3–4 inch river rock placed along the house foundation improves drainage and keeps soil from splashing against siding. Install over landscape fabric at 3–4 inch depth.

How to Install River Rock

  1. 1
Edge the area: Install metal or plastic edging to contain the rock. This is especially important for round stones, which migrate more easily than angular crushed stone.
  2. 2
Clear weeds and debris: Remove all vegetation, roots, and debris. This is critical — river rock that covers weeds will have weeds growing through it within months.
  3. 3
Install woven landscape fabric: Overlap seams by 6 inches. Pin every 10 inches along edges. Cut X-slits for existing plants. Do NOT skip this step — rock sinks into bare soil within 2–3 years.
  4. 4
Spread rock to 2–3 inch depth: Dump and rake to even depth. For dry creek beds, arrange larger rocks at center, smaller at edges, with variety for a natural look.
  5. 5
Tuck fabric edges under edging: Fold any exposed fabric edges under the edging or bury the edge under an inch of rock. Exposed fabric degrades in UV light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is river rock good for landscaping?

Yes — river rock is excellent for decorative beds, water features, dry creek beds, and around trees. Its smooth, rounded appearance looks natural and professional. It lasts indefinitely, never needs replacing, and suppresses weeds effectively over landscape fabric.

How much river rock do I need?

For a 2-inch decorative layer, one cubic yard covers 162 sq ft. For dry creek beds, a 4–6 inch depth is typical (81–54 sq ft per yard). Use our gravel calculator for exact quantities based on your area and depth.

How deep should river rock be in a garden bed?

2–3 inches is ideal for decorative ground cover. This depth suppresses weeds, looks full, and doesn't shift easily. For dry creek beds, use 4–6 inches of larger river rock for a realistic appearance.

Does river rock need landscape fabric underneath?

Yes — always install woven landscape fabric under river rock. Without fabric, rock gradually sinks into the soil over 2–3 years and weeds grow up through it. The fabric keeps rock separate from soil and blocks weed germination.

What size river rock is best for landscaping?

For ground cover and garden beds, 1–2 inch river rock works well. For dry creek beds and water features, use a mix of 2–4 inch rocks for a realistic look. For borders and edging accents, 4–6 inch boulders add visual weight.
