Best Uses for River Rock
Most popular use. 1–2 inch river rock over landscape fabric at 2–3 inches deep. Looks natural, suppresses weeds, lasts indefinitely. Great around ornamental plants and shrubs.
A dry creek bed (also called a river run) uses river rock of various sizes arranged in a winding bed shape. Excellent for drainage swales and also purely decorative. Use 3–6 inch rocks at 4–6 inch depth.
River rock around trees suppresses weeds without the annual replacement of mulch. Avoid placing rock against the trunk. Extend 3–4 feet from trunk for large trees.
River rock is the standard surround for water features, fountains, and ponds. Natural, waterproof, and pairs beautifully with water plants.
Large river rocks (4–8 inches) make excellent natural edging along paths and between lawn and beds. Stack 2–3 rocks high for a low border wall effect.
3–4 inch river rock placed along the house foundation improves drainage and keeps soil from splashing against siding. Install over landscape fabric at 3–4 inch depth.
River Rock Sizes Guide
| Size | Best Uses | Coverage (2" layer) |
|---|---|---|
| Small (1/2–1") | Ground cover, between pavers, drainage | ~150 sq ft/yard |
| Medium (1–2") | Garden beds, paths, water features | ~162 sq ft/yard |
| Large (2–4") | Dry creek beds, borders, water features | ~162 sq ft/yard |
| XL (4–6") | Accent boulders, edging, focal points | Individual placement |
How to Install River Rock
- 1Edge the area: Install metal or plastic edging to contain the rock. This is especially important for round stones, which migrate more easily than angular crushed stone.
- 2Clear weeds and debris: Remove all vegetation, roots, and debris. This is critical — river rock that covers weeds will have weeds growing through it within months.
- 3Install woven landscape fabric: Overlap seams by 6 inches. Pin every 10 inches along edges. Cut X-slits for existing plants. Do NOT skip this step — rock sinks into bare soil within 2–3 years.
- 4Spread rock to 2–3 inch depth: Dump and rake to even depth. For dry creek beds, arrange larger rocks at center, smaller at edges, with variety for a natural look.
- 5Tuck fabric edges under edging: Fold any exposed fabric edges under the edging or bury the edge under an inch of rock. Exposed fabric degrades in UV light.
