What You'll Need
✓Mulch (calculated quantity)
✓Wheelbarrow
✓Garden rake
✓Edging tool or spade
✓Garden gloves
✓Hose or watering can
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1Calculate how much mulch you needMeasure your bed's length and width. Use the mulch calculator (link below) to get cubic yards and bag count. Order 10% extra for irregular shapes and settling.→ Open Mulch Calculator
- 2Edge your bedsUse a half-moon edger or sharp spade to create clean edges. This defines where mulch goes and prevents it from spilling onto the lawn. Edges should be 2–3 inches deep.
- 3Remove existing weedsPull weeds by hand or treat with a natural weed killer 1–2 weeks before mulching. Mulching over established weeds only delays the problem.
- 4Check existing mulch depthIf you're refreshing, measure what's already there. If it's 2+ inches, you may only need 1 inch on top. If old mulch is matted and moldy, rake or remove it first.
- 5Apply mulch at 3 inches deepDump mulch in piles, then spread with a garden rake. Work systematically from back to front. Keep 2–3 inches of space around plant stems and 3–6 inches from tree trunks.
- 6Rake to even depthUse a landscape rake to level. Check depth with a ruler in several spots — 3 inches is the target for most beds.
- 7Water lightlyA light spray helps the mulch settle and stick together, especially important in windy areas. Avoid saturating — mulch should be moist, not soaked.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✗Volcano mulching: Piling mulch against tree trunks causes rot. Always leave a gap.
- ✗Too thin (<2 inches): Ineffective weed control and moisture retention.
- ✗Too thick (>4 inches): Suffocates roots and creates pest habitat.
- ✗Skipping weed removal: Established weeds will push through. Remove them first.
- ✗Using landscape fabric underneath: It degrades in 3–5 years, becomes impossible to remove, and blocks soil benefits.
