The formula is the same as for any material: (Length ร Width ร Depth in inches) รท 324 = cubic yards. For playground use, always calculate based on the ASTM-required minimum depth for your equipment height โ not just the surface area.
Rubber mulch is sold in bags (typically 0.8 cu ft) or by the cubic yard from specialty suppliers. For large playgrounds, buying in bulk saves 30โ40% over bagged. Most playground installers recommend adding 10โ15% extra to account for settling.
Unlike wood mulch, rubber mulch does not decompose and does not need annual replenishment. However, it can shift over time โ plan for minor redistribution once a year with a rake.
