The 2-Layer Driveway System

For any gravel driveway, a two-layer system outperforms a single deep layer of the same material. Here's why each layer matters:

Layer 1: #411 Crusher Run (Base)
3–4 inches

Compacts into a rock-hard structural base. The angular edges lock together and resist movement under vehicle weight. This is what prevents ruts.

Layer 2: #57 Crushed Stone (Surface)
2–3 inches

Angular 3/4" stone that drains well, doesn't track into the house, and looks attractive. Stays in place better than round stones.

Optional: Landscape Fabric
Under layer 1

Prevents gravel from sinking into soil over time and blocks weeds. Use a woven geotextile — not plastic sheeting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

A gravel driveway needs a minimum of 4 inches total — ideally 6–8 inches for heavy vehicle traffic. Use a 2-layer system: 3–4 inches of compacted #411 crusher run base, then 2–3 inches of #57 crushed stone surface.

How deep should gravel be for a walkway or path?

For a pedestrian walkway, 2–3 inches of pea gravel or crushed stone on a compacted base is sufficient. For higher foot traffic, use 3 inches and install edging on both sides to contain the gravel.

How deep should gravel be for a garden bed?

For purely decorative coverage in garden beds, 2 inches of gravel over landscape fabric is standard. This is enough to suppress weeds and look attractive without adding excessive weight.

Can gravel be too deep?

Yes. More than 4 inches in decorative beds is wasteful and can make walking uncomfortable. For driveways, excess depth beyond 8 inches doesn't improve stability. Always follow the 2-layer system with the right depth for the load.

What happens if gravel is too shallow?

Shallow gravel (under 2 inches for paths, under 4 inches for driveways) shifts under traffic, creates bald spots, and doesn't suppress weeds effectively. It also sinks into soil faster without proper depth and a fabric layer underneath.
