How to Mulch Around Trees

5 min read

🍩
Donut shape
Gap at trunk, ring outward
✓ Correct
🌋
Volcano shape
Piled high against trunk
✗ Wrong — kills trees

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. 1
    Measure the ring size
At minimum, extend 3 feet from the trunk in all directions. For established trees, go to the drip line (edge of canopy) if possible.
  2. 2
    Remove existing weeds
Pull weeds by hand or use a natural weed killer. Mulching over weeds temporarily suppresses them but they'll grow through.
  3. 3
Calculate how much mulch you need
Use the formula: π × radius² × depth ÷ 324 = cubic yards. Or use our calculator below.
  4. 4
    Apply in a donut shape
Spread 3–4 inches deep, working outward from the trunk. Stop 3–6 inches away from the bark — never let mulch touch the trunk.
  5. 5
    Inspect and top up annually
Check depth each spring. Add 1–2 inches when mulch compresses below 2 inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you mulch around trees correctly?

Apply 3–4 inches of mulch in a wide ring around the tree (ideally to the drip line), but keep mulch 3–6 inches away from the trunk. The "donut" shape, not the "volcano" shape, is correct.

How far out should mulch go around a tree?

Ideally extend mulch to the tree's drip line (the outermost edge of the canopy). For large trees this can be 10–20 feet. At minimum, extend 3 feet from the trunk in all directions.

How much mulch do I need for a tree ring?

For a 6-foot diameter ring (area ≈ 28 sq ft) at 3 inches deep, you need about 0.26 cubic yards (roughly 4 bags of 2 cu ft mulch). Use the calculator for any ring size.

Can you put too much mulch around a tree?

Yes. More than 4 inches restricts oxygen to roots. Mulch touching the trunk causes rot and disease. "Volcano mulching" is one of the most common ways homeowners unintentionally damage trees.
