When to Use Landscape Fabric Under Gravel
Essential. Without fabric, gravel mixes with soil within 1–2 years creating muddy, uneven surface. Use 4–6 oz woven fabric for heavy vehicle traffic.
Highly recommended. Pea gravel migrates easily — fabric keeps it contained and prevents soil from coming up through the stones.
Recommended. Fabric prevents rocks from sinking into soil over time. Use lighter 3 oz fabric.
Use drainage sock around the pipe, not flat fabric. Flat fabric across the trench bottom can impede drainage.
Not recommended. Gravel under mulch creates a perched water table, trapping moisture near roots.
Choosing the Right Fabric
| Fabric Type | Weight | Best For | Avoid For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven polypropylene | 3 oz | Walkways, decorative gravel | Heavy vehicle traffic |
| Heavy woven geotextile | 4–6 oz | Driveways, high-traffic paths | Planting beds |
| Non-woven landscape fabric | 2–3 oz | Under mulch only | Under gravel (compacts) |
| Plastic sheeting | N/A | Nothing recommended | Everything — blocks drainage |
